FLY TYING ESSENTIALS @ THE OAKS FISHERY

This time of year anglers likes to prepare for the upcoming season. As a hobby or even a burning passion, many anglers will take to tying their own flies. It may be salmon, trout or even pike, there is a fly for everything. This article will show you the basic tools required to start your fly-tying journey.


  1. VICE

The vice is used to hold your hook in place so you can start tying. They come in many shapes and sizes but the standard lever vice is sufficient for any beginner's needs. You can either have a free-standing pedestal vice or G-0Clamp Vice which clamps to your tabletop. Prices start @ £35.00 for vices - available at The Oaks



2. CERAMIC BOBBIN HOLDER

The ceramic bobbin holder allows for a smooth transition of the thread to the hook, minimizing breakages due to the bobbin holder being ceramic. Metal bobbin holders are notorious for wearing at the top and damaging the thread.

3. SCISSORS

Scissors may seem an obvious choice but selecting the correct pair is vital. Fine-pointed, razor-sharp scissors are proven to be good with hackles and threads and modify the overall shape of your fly. More coarse pairs could be used for wires, leads and tinsels

4. THREADS/TINSEL/FLASHES


There is a wide and varied range of threads, tinsels and flashes available for you to start tying your own flies.

5. DUBBING NEEDLE

A dubbing needle is used for picking out dubbing to give the fly a fuller body. It is also used for applying varnish to the head of the fly

6. HACKLE PLIERS

Hackle Pliers have a similar use to a bobbin. They are used to wrap material, effectively around the body of your fly.

7. HAIR STACKER

A hair stacker allows you to match evenly amounts of fibre/materials to your fly. You can stack all of your colours onto the stackers before moving them onto your fly.

8. REVOLVING WHIP FINISHING TOOL

A revolving whip-finishing tool is a surefire way of assuring your material will not unravel when you finally put your fly to water. They have a large wide opening making it easy to tackle any size of fly.
